沖縄在住の絵本作家Savaさんの東京のギャラリーでは初の個展となります。中学時代に偶然聞いた音楽をきっかけに沖縄に興味を持ち、沖縄の文化人類学、民俗学を学ぶため琉球大学へ入学。卒業後、沖縄の地域おこしの活動を経て絵本作家となったSavaさん。昨年より企画していた今回の個展ですが、開催直前の7月に第一子の女の子を出産されました。そのような記念すべきタイミングで初の個展を開催させて頂き、喜ばしく思っています。

沖縄の動植物を題材に、アクリルガッシュで細やかに丁寧に描かれた作品は、太陽の強さや自然のエネルギー、そして沖縄の豊かな恵みを感じさせるような、色鮮やかな世界を表現しています。ぜひご高覧ください。
Savaさん「私は沖縄本島北部に位置する瀬底島を〝風の島〟と呼んでいる。そこでは、毎日、風の存在を感じることができるからだ。(中略)　猫の毛は逆立ち、アカショウビンは風に乗ってヒュヒューンと舞い、福木の黄色い実が落ちると、それをコウモリたちが狙った。サシバの群れは、北風とともに島にやって来る。ヤギはいつものんびりと草を食べ、夜になるとリュウキュウコノハズクがホーホーと鳴く声を風が運んできた。風の島で暮らし、巡り合った景色や生き物たちを題材に作品を描くようになった。今回は、そうした作品の中から、『風の島からの便り』と題した一連のシリーズをお届けしたい。今回、絵画堂ギャラリーで作品を展示できる機会をいただき、とても嬉しく思います。風がお便りを届けてきてくれるような豊かな日々。そこから生まれた作品を通して、沖縄の風を少しでも感じていただけたら幸いです」

Picture Book Artist Sava (Mizuki Nohara)
“Letters from the Island of Wind”

This exhibition marks picture book artist Sava’s (Mizuki Nohara) first solo show at a gallery in Tokyo.

Her interest in Okinawa began in junior high school, sparked by a piece of music she happened to hear. This led her to study cultural anthropology and folklore at the University of the Ryukyus. After graduation, she became involved in community revitalization efforts in Okinawa, eventually starting her career as a picture book artist.

This exhibition has been in the works since last year, and in July—just before the opening—she gave birth to her first child, a baby girl. We are delighted to present her first solo exhibition at such a memorable moment in her life.

Sava’s works, delicately painted in acrylic gouache and inspired by the flora and fauna of Okinawa, depict a vivid world that captures the island’s radiant sun, the energy of its natural surroundings, and the abundance of its blessings.

“I call Sesoko Island, located in the northern part of Okinawa’s main island, the ‘Island of Wind’—because you can truly feel the presence of the wind every single day….The fur of cats stands on end, ruddy kingfishers swoop with the wind, and bats target the yellow fukugi fruits as they fall. Flocks of grey-faced buzzards arrive with the north wind. Goats graze leisurely as always, and at night, the wind carries the hoots of the Ryukyu scops owl.Living on this Island of Wind, I’ve come to create works inspired by the scenes and creatures I encounter.In this exhibition, I present a series titled Letters from the Island of Wind, featuring works born from these days filled with the richness of nature and the ever-present wind.I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to exhibit my work at Kaigado Gallery. I hope these pieces allow you to feel just a little of Okinawa’s wind through the messages they carry.”
